Tornadoes 02:57
Laid off at the factory and I started drinkin' again They said to keep my head on straight in case they need to call me in There ain't no more high cotton we're all just sittin' on the ground Throwin' silver bullet cans and our dreams in the air and shootin' them right down Well I've lost faith in myself because the company that I keep around I wake up every morning with a headache it don't seem to go away I drink a pot of coffee read my fortune and hope that it's wrong I know she's gonna leave me but I don't wanna face it all alone So i pick up thirty of my best friends and drink until they're gone I've lost faith in myself because the company that I keep around I whipped my cousin's ass because he had a bad attitude Or maybe it was just that I had had more than a few I've got to get out of here I can't go on like this I've got some friends that live in the Midwest but they know I just won't go It's my fear of tornadoes that keeps me around here

He was always in trouble nearly all of his life Even though he had a good heart He was born the same as you and me But his brain was a little slow to start All throughout school he'd act like a fool Getting kicked out and startin' fights They'd send him away for a while to stay In the home for the kids that ain't right But before you start pointing your finger What if it was your daughter or son What if it was your brother who was maladjusted And livin' like John on the run He'd do his time and they'd send him back It was a vicious cycle you see Then before you knew it somehow he blew it And was right back on losin' street The years went by a day at a time And left him worse for the wear But he got a gun said his hard livin' was done Amphetamines had him walkin' on air But before you start pointing your finger What if it was your daughter or son What if it was your brother who was maladjusted And livin' like John on the run Well the last time that anyone saw him He was walking in a convenience store He had a knife in his hand just yellin' his demands And the cops stormed in through the door They aimed for his head but he lunged instead So they put one straight through his heart Some say he had it comin' others just don't say nothin' And remember all the bad that he did But before you start pointing your finger What if it was your daughter or son What if it was your brother who was maladjusted And livin' like John on the run

Dorothy wakes up in her old S10 Flips her Toto's Greatest Hits cassette over again She's done rolled in the hay and scraped all the tin And taken every ounce of courage from all the men On the old brick road back home Gets her news updates in a gas station line Says the kids are walkin' out and going home The rest of you suckers gotta fight to get stoned But Dorothy don't care and she hits the door And laughs I wonder when they're gonna realize They ain't in Kansas anymore Bad weather comes and blows you away Pray to God you're someplace you wanna stay The man behind the curtain is buyin' your meals But all he wants from you honey is to click your heels Dorothy heads south it's warmer down there She likes what the sunlight does to her hair And those ruby red boots her prize possessions She scores a little weed for a pretty boy's affections Don't let them drop a house on your dreams Don't be a part of somebody's else's schemes The man behind the curtain is only a fraud I'm gonna get you my pretty my hand to God

I can hear the mountain call That desperate and low longing sound And I will go even if I have to crawl And leave a trail of blood from my hands on the ground It's a sharp narrow road it ain't easy to climb But streets of silver wait on the other side I'll say bye not there's no time to pack I'll take only the clothes on my back For sometime I've had the moon in my lap When I get up there I'll finally give it back I won't need the crutch no more I'll have my own light that's for sure Coming down on the other side The wind will feel like broken glass on my skin But I won't turn and go the other way I'll leave my demons up there to stay I'll bed down when I reach the other side Those roads soft and the rivers roarin' wide And I'll return home don't you fear I'll be back as myself my dear I can hear the mountain call That desperate and low longing sound I will go even if I have to crawl And leave a trail of blood from my hands on the ground

I left my family and left my home Just to sing this shit into a microphone I sing way too much nowadays because I think too much My mind's a maze I try to grit my teeth til my jaw is locked Some days it feels like I just can't stop The road I'm on is full of warnin' signs The bridge is out but I just keep drivin' I probably should turn back around And give my wife and kids a kiss Instead of singing to the folks in the bar About all the things I miss What I thought would make things better Has only made it worse I traded everything I love For the verse chorus verse Folks in Kentucky down to Tennessee East or west it's all the same to me Faces in a crowd that I just can't see I've got a tuned up guitar but I'm singin' off key Wanted to sing a couple songs drink a few rounds But the songs took fire and burned my world to the ground Now I stay up late cause I just can't sleep And pray to the ceiling for how it used to be I probably should turn back around And give my wife and kids a kiss Instead of singing to the folks in the bar About all the things I miss What I thought would make things better Has only made it worse I traded everything I love For the verse chorus verse

Outta Tune 03:30
All we've done is left behind We must only cling to tomorrow A new day to bring sunshine and rain And hopeful laughter to follow Feelin' low and lost or feelin' pure and clean Take a look around at all the blues and greens The ocean rolls the sky controls And all we are is in-between Sittin' in the dark or turnin' on the lights It's not a decision often made overnight You feel confused seldom amused But you'll get back on the track of right So take my hand or give it a thought And we'll sing songs like we used to To the by and by for Townes and Guy Even if we're outta tune

He grew up on the border of Texas and New Mexico He moved to Kentucky when he got the money to go He kept his hat and that old pair of cowboy boots He picked up a fiddle and tried to saw away at his blues And he dreamed at nighttime of dancin' with the one that he loved And writin' songs that came to him from above And pickin' guitar in an old time string band But he's just a farmer with too many dreams on his hands He spent a lifetime workin' out on the land And if he was asked could write you a poem on command He had no luck with women he was always just a little too shy He could never muster up the courage just to say hi And he dreamed at nighttime of dancin' with the one that he loved And writin' songs that came to him from above And pickin' guitar in an old time string band But he's just a farmer with too many dreams on his hands When he was a boy workin' outside Levelland He'd tune in the radio to hear ol' Bill Monroe's band He thought that the bright lights would be waitin' for him if he came But labors the only life for a man of his family name He lived in pain the last few years on the end Hard livin' and workin' had made leather out of his skin Well he passed last Sunday with a bottle next to his bed Wondering why his whole life had been spent and lived in his head And he dreamed at nighttime of dancin' with the one that he loved And writin' songs that came to him from above And pickin' guitar in an old time string band But he's just a farmer with too many dreams on his hands

She said you have to know I'm sorry Then stood up and walked away Through the door and out of the life That he thought they'd made He just sat there at the table Until his coffee went cold He never knew he'd play a character In one of the oldest stories told Some folks never see it coming And others can tell from the start Sometimes love will blindside you And bust a whole right through your heart She didn't think much on the way to the station But wondered if she was jumpin' the gun She didn't know when it all would hit her But she didn't shed no tear not even one He made his way back to the bedroom Closing the blinds along the way He stopped and stared at a picture Of an old run down home in a busted frame Some folks never see it coming And others can tell from the start Sometimes love will blindside you And bust a whole right through your heart She took that west bound Greyhound And ended up in Big Sky Trying to track down a feeling But lately they're so hard to come by Now everyday he checks the mailbox Hopin' for a letter of some kind Then he loads up in his pickup And tried to drive the thought of her out of his mind Some folks never see it coming And others can tell from the start Sometimes love will blindside you And bust a whole right through your heart

You found my bones layin' on the sidewalk I was scattered in the streets You picked me up and held me together Until I could stand on my feet You know the last one that found me Left me here forever to stay I'm so glad you walked over I was thinkin' of crawlin' your way So tell me all about your sorrows And tell me all about your truths But please don't turn me away tomorrow I can stay as long as you want me to It's so good to be inside now And sheltered from the winter storm I lost my coat back in the summer You light the fire now that keeps me warm I've never been too much for talkin' But all of a sudden there's a lot to say I just wanna lay here right beside you dear And study the lines on your face So tell me all about your sorrows And tell me all about your truths But please don't turn me away tomorrow I can stay as long as you want me to

Last Goodbye 03:59
I just talk to the birds that fly by It's about all I can do anymore To this bed I'm bound in my thoughts I drown I've got nothing left to live for The dogs are barking they need water and food But I couldn't get up if I wanted to I'll call the shelter and have them come around They'll be better off if they're put down My hands they shake my body aches Last I heard it's spread into my lungs I've got no family coming around I'm sure they'll show their faces when they lay me in the ground There's a young man who stops by a few times a week They send him over to check on me But I know he's stealing hell I ain't blind He just thinks I don't see But what's there to do what can I say I can't defend myself anyway But maybe I'd get lucky and he'd smother me And put me out of this misery I don't pray no I've had enough delay My welcome I've outstayed I've long lost hope I'm ready to die I hope this to be my last goodbye
